Whether you choose to believe the name is a portmanteau of mi chela helada ("my ice cold beer") or a contraction of Michel Ésper, known for ordering his beer with lime, salt and a straw like a limonada in 1960s Mexico (hence, Michel-ada), this Mexican drink blends tomato juice with beer, lime, hot sauce, and spices. Some regional variations include soy sauce, clamato, Chamoy powder or Serrano chile peppers, so this is the perfect recipe for a true kitchen raid!
Tajin or chili-salt blend to rim glass |
kosher or sea salt |
2 oz squeezed juice from 2 limes, reserve half a juiced lime for garnish |
2 tsp hot sauce, preferably a Mexican-style brand like Cholula |
1 tsp Worcester sauce or teriyaki or soy without salt in the recipe |
1 12 oz light Mexican beer such as Modelo, Corona, or Tecate, well chilled |
Pour Tajín or salt into a small, shallow dish. Rub a lime wedge on the edge of the glass and then dip the rim into the dish. Fill with lime juice, hot sauce, Worcester sauce and a pinch of salt. Stir. Fill the glass with ice, top with beer. Stir gently to mix without making the beer flat. Top with remaining beer as you drink.
