Susie Davidson Powell, an award-winning food and drinks writer, has covered the dining scene of the Capital Region and Hudson Valley for a decade, and is the founder/creative director of The Dishing, a dining and hospitality guide focused on the stories behind the bar and the plate. As the long-time dining critic for the Albany Times Union, Susie’s restaurant reviews run weekly and her food and drink features have appeared in the Hudson Valley, Upstate, 518 and Women at Work magazines. She’s received several national awards for food criticism from the Society of Features Journalism and served as an invited James Beard Awards judge for New York State.
Born and raised near London, in the UK, Susie worked in Warsaw, Poland, the Greek island of Nisyros, and Speedway, Indianapolis, before moving to New York City where she kept her shoes in the oven and ate her way around Manhattan. As a research director, she traveled extensively across the U.S. sampling local foods from El Paso to L.A. She has worked as a bartender, late night cocktail waitress and server in innumerable restaurants (an unbeatable education in human behavior). Susie moved to Columbia County, NY, in 2003 just as the farm-to-table scene was drawing city chefs upstate.
Susie’s dining, wine, cocktail and travel articles appear in Columbia Greene Media, Today Media and Hearst publications. Pre-pandemic she hosted DISH, a series of private wine tastings and pop up dinners in collaboration with Stone Fox Farm and she periodically offers online wine and spirit tastings for the Times Union. Her dining reviews run weekly and she is always search of good food. 🍽
